My Leo I solidus - Constantinople / Victory I love the 3/4 portraits on Roman gold coins of the 4th and 5th century. TBH i find most other 4th/5th century Roman issues to be quite dull. I'm slowly going to replace my AEs and siliquae of that era with solidi. My other gold coin is the Alexander III i posted the other day.
I will add that I have my eye on an AV noble of Edward III, and an AV Unite of Charles I. I'm working on a side-project of one-per-ruler big coins of English monarchs, and those two are gems!
So many different colors for gold. I like the Jayasimha II Pagoda coin due to the tiny elephant counter mark & the golden color. Here is my gold tray (Hecte from Lesbos). LESBOS, Mytilene EL Heckte - (Pigasus) 521-478 B.C. 2.55 grams, 10 mm Obv: Winged boar facing right, Rev: Head of Roaring Lion right Grade: good Fine with decent centering. Incuse roaring lion is well preserved (inverse relief) & obverse boar’s head is worn. Other: From Eye Appealing 4/2015 ex Heritage 2014
Nice coin, C89 ... Yah, I wasn't sure if we were allowed to post those babies, but since you've opened the door slightly, I'm gonna fling it wide open with another cool Lesbos example ... LESBOS, Mytilene. EL Hekte – Sixth Stater Circa 478-455 BC Diameter: 10 mm Weight: 2.48 grams Obverse: Ram’s head right Reverse: Incuse bull’s head right Reference: Bodenstedt Em. 27; HGC 6, 954
Here's a tray from my coin cabinet with some gold in it. Several solidi and a hyperpyron. Other stuff is assorted ancient.
That is a really nice tray that would certainly be fun to examine more closely. Thanks for posting it. If possible/convenient, please post a bigger photo to really examine.
Thanks. While I have the coin cabinet at home, the coins only come to visit once in a while, they usually live in the safe deposit box. I will see if I have some individual pics in my computer and I'll take some more pictures the next time I bring the coins home.
