Please guess the grade of the 1938-D Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, FS or NOT FS, and + grade or star designation.

No FS so 64/65 we're talking just a Bic Mac Value Meal at McDonald's. I gave it a 65, the little cut on the cheekbone notwithstanding.

Persistent bugger, lol. I just voted just the top two don't have them.

I went MS65 FS on this one. The planchet flaws on the obv rim really stand out IMO.

I see those, and they make me wonder. Nickel is such a hard metal to strike. I imagine is does not flow so easily as, say, copper or silver.

Could the metal simply have ripped apart a bit while the edges were being rolled up on the planchet before striking? I once (1968-69) worked making tailpipes, and this kind of split was common when flaring out the tailpipe to make a tapered flange. In fact, I spent countless hours grinding them flat after they had been welded!

I tend to look at them as a cross between a ragged clip and a fissure.

MS 66 not FS....fields are clean; rim worries me a bit (even if it is not damage, I think it detracts from a higher grade)

I agree. Also noted the cut on the cheek but didn't think that egregious enough to hold it back from 65. No FS.

Is that spot on the right rim at 3 o clock corrosion or staining?

Did you vote in the poll? Right now the only two people who voted for FS are me and @RonSanderson .

I dunno, even after looking under 25X it is hard to tell.

With your luck on wheel marks that you can’t see I’d lean that they detailed this for the rims that are obvious.

If that was present before the strike then I’m at 66 because it’s a pretty clean coin overall.

Ummm, wouldn’t you have a bit of advantage, like having the coin, the holder, and the grade in front of you? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Technically not FS but it still could grade that way.
This must have been a very early strike. (And a good strike.) 65 is likely.

I am on the honor system. Everyone has an expected grade before they submit a coin. You guys just have to trust me that the grade I vote for is what I expected before submission. But no worries, I can prove my honesty. All will be revealed, but just like I had to wait for the TPG, you guys must wait for the thread to run its course.

I will support @Lehigh96 's honesty as I recall previous threads where his vote was different from the revealed grade (and he is an honest one in general :)).

    And there is the twist!

As usual, there is always a twist, but you guys are gonna have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure this one out.

I went MS65 Not FS (although I forgot to check the No FS box). I think the third pillar causes this to not be an FS. I have it 6-5-3-6.

Although the coin is extremely clean, I think the distracting planchet flaw at 8 o'clock limits it to MS65.
