Thanks for the tip lehigh. The difference is that this will not be just for those who are new to numismatics. This course is but future courses will be focused in specialized fields in numismatics. For instance there may be an entire class that focuses on Morgan and Peace dollars.
Last night Peter had offered to help me with CTU. For all of you who may suspect I am lying open up this file it is from a conversation I had with Peter last night.
I never doubted for a second that Peter gave you permission to post this Josh. I was merely pointing that what you are doing is not something that CoinTalk is doing. It's you doing it, and whoever else you can get to help you, not CoinTalk. That's all I was saying.
Well there is definitely more to it than that GDJMSP For starters CTU is only open to CoinTalk Members. I still have much more to discuss with Peter so I can't say much else at this time, thank you.
I'm certainly interested in this class that you have designed. However, I have regular classes and an online math class that I already have to keep up with. So, I would like to know what level of time commitment this is going to require. Any chance yall have figured that out yet, or am I just going to have to blindly jump in?
This summarizes my thoughts on the subject exactly. This is how I felt about the Newbie Institute and my feelings have not changed this time around.
Well the course does not officially start unti may 11th 2014 and I am still working on course material. At this moment in time I couldn't tell you how long it will take. Most likely this course will be updated from monday-wednesday each week. Even that I can't confirm yet but that is most likely how it will go. I'll be sure to give everyone enough time for everything.
I also have concerns, that all enrolled, and participate, give up their email or other info, realize that CoinTalks influence do not cover that site or activity. If someone gets a virus or identity theft, it is not CoinTalks problem. Rules and such may be different as to postings, etc. I am happy that people want to learn and take part in any learning process, but most can not maintain the commitment. I do feel that you as 'professor' should list your and your teaching staff's background, experience, and expertise, for the students to evaluate the program. Not trying to rain on the parade, but since the name resembles this site that I think enough to donate time on, I would like a quality product and not just an enthusiastic product. Best of Luck in your efforts.
All of the information is on edmodo's side. All I see is the usernames of each person that signs up. As for qualifications that is a good idea I'll get back to you on that.
Josh, I wasn't implying that you would have access to their email or such, but whenever there seems to be a computer or identity problem with members, the most common remark is that it is Cointalk that is the problem, and usually it is not. I want everyone to realize, that they are going to a 'university', away from the CoinTalk site, and they are on the own there.
Oh for crying out loud. Let the kid have his fun. He's not hurting anyone and he's probably helping a few folks......
I'd think people would be well aware of this as CTU uses Edmodo which is not in any shape or form related to CoinTalk. Any issues people have with CTU ask me what is going on or they ask Edmodo which has customer support. Now as for my credentials I will list them below: -AP US History Tutor when I was in High School -Leader of my high school's Coin Club in 2010 - History Tutor at my current university I do not have a long list of credentials because as most of you know/suspected I am still a young man. I turned 19 about a month ago. However I assure you that I have the capability to teach other people. As for experience in numismatics I am well aware that I do not know everything. This is why I have been asking for help from more experienced members of CT
I have made anothe thread detailing more about me. If you already signed up for CTU or thinking about it give this a read. http://www.cointalk.com/threads/my-story.245472/
So how will this be different than the ANA Numismatic Diploma and RCNA correspondence courses that these associations offer to their members?? (I am sure there are other coin associations that offer correspondence courses as well). ANA summer seminars are also pretty darn good... Yes, there is a cost to those courses, but I always figured you get what you pay for, and knowledge can be valuable. http://www.money.org/explore-the-world-of-money/school-of-numismatics/numismatic-diploma.aspx http://www.rcna.ca/courseI.php
CTU will require a lot more than just six courses. I aim to model CTU after how an actual university functions. you will take a perhaps 6-8 courses a year and at the end of 2-8 years you will "graduate" While the first course US Coins 101 is free and there may be other free courses offered but I may require people to pay for other courses. Prices will vary on the course subject. Students who want to learn should be prepared for a long term commitment just as you would if attending college.
Hopefully there won't be the usual chirping of "harassment!" or "youre being mean!" with this comment as one of the points of this forum is the pursuit of knowledge which may come from constructive criticism. With that said, here is mine: 1) Naming it the "Future of Cointalk" is a bit misleading and a gross overstatement. 2) Self promotion, or discussing/creating something that can eventually create income from hyping it up on the forum I believe is a forum violation. I am surprised this slipped the mods. I believe it has because we are being told Peter supports it. I am curious if it is adhering or developing into what was actually or allegedly discussed. 3) I have to question a "University" whose creator even agrees is not an expert. I really see this as trying to get forum experts to agree to do the teaching legwork while you slowroll this into a paying service/education from which you reap some financial reward. If your heart was as noble as you are trying to come off, you would not allude to the idea that money is going to eventually be a factor so that you can say in hindsight that something "this big" (the future of cointalk!) could be managed/supported for free and would have to have some type of monetary medium involved. I will not be joining. Just as I learned in college, I very seldom find someone soooo much smarter than myself, who knows so much about something that they could teach it to me than, lets say, a book, or this very forum itself. Again, hopefully this is not taken as an insult as it is just my analysis and resulting opinion that doesn't name-call, curse, etc.
Sweet heavenly days! The class could last up to 8 years??.........I'm no rocket scientist, but in that amount of time I could be!
Is he? I submit that he would help a whole lot more people by simply creating fun, interesting, and educational threads on Cointalk. Lord knows we need a break from the Detecto Entertainment Network.
Perhaps he will be able to help a few folks, sir, and while welcome to have his fun, nothing said or asked by others in this thread seems unreasonable IMO. All said respectfully, of course.
