DREAM ON! When has ANYTHING that was found to be so deeply flawed that it had to be replaced BEEN replaced with what came before it? I can't think of even once right now.

    Any field. Any standard.

Well that's just it Kurt, grading standards weren't changed because they were flawed. They were changed so the TPGs could maintain submission numbers ;)

No, no, I'm saying flawed NOW.

It's a human nature problem. Normal people refuse to "go back". What we DO have is an obstinacy situation. Some people ALSO refuse to advance.

Nobody knows that more than a central Pennsylvanian, where the "unofficial official" slogan is, "We never needed it before, we don't need it now", spoken disturbingly loudly with a thick Pennsylvania German accent.

Well lemme put it this way. In 1986 when the ANA decided on what it's new grading standards would be, which was also and not coincidentally when PCGS decided to come into being, all the coins that had previously been graded as MS65, suddenly became graded MS63. And all the coins in the other grades dropped by the same ratio. And then it stayed that way for almost 20 years.

But when the TPGS changed their grading standards in 2004, all those coins that had been graded MS63 since 1986, almost over-night they became MS65 again ! And all the other coins in all the other grades got upgraded by the same ratio.

Now that's what I call going back to what used to be ! And it pretty much shoots holes in your theory that people won't do it. Not only will they do it if and when it suits their needs - they have done it ! And I have absolutely no doubt they will do it again.

Why ? Because sooner or later they will have reached the point that upgrading is way beyond ridiculous. It's been ridiculous for quite a few years now, and just about everybody knows, recognizes that it's ridiculous and they are losing faith in the TPGs because of it. And when submissions drop, they'll change them again, and eventually back to the way they used to be.

I can’t even find even a single sentence in there that I don’t factually disagree with. We seemingly have ZERO basis for continued exploration of this particular topic.

I don't know, Doug. From a business perspective I've a hard time seeing how it could be implemented without the TPGs forcing themselves to shoulder the blame and leaving a lot of very upset collectors in the process. I'm certainly not suggesting some supposed business maven will not try to spin it (just look at some of the idiotic moves even larger businesses make today), but most folks aren't that stupid... or so I hope. Additionally, I've a hard time believing people will be okay with lower numbers and is why I cannot help but to think another new system, perhaps one utilizing 100 points, would be a better fit for them. For the hobby? Not so much...

A rose by any other name... ;)
