Good morning, Numismatists. As February is the Valentines month, I thought it would be a great topic to talk about our first time finding that one coin that made us believe in the love of coin collecting. I was much younger then...But, numismatics seemed to be in my life from the very beginning. My Grandfather on my mother's side was a long-time collector. He passed before I was born and when he did, my Grandmother cashed in most of his collection at the bank...for face value! This is a very common story in the circle of life. But, my mother did receive a small collection of Proof and Mint Sets to remember him by. Then, when I was about 12, a friend of mine showed me this magazine, CoinAge. This thing was great! There were all these pictures and I fell in love with a lady called, Walking Liberty. Watching her walk on that Half Dollar became an obsession. These were the first coins I began collecting on my own. Affordable for a kid at $12-$20 a piece even back then, it makes me sad that they would probably just get heaped in the junk silver pile. So, even though my heart went to Lady Liberty, I still have a special place for collecting Proof and Mint sets. My mom would tell me stories about when she was younger, my Grandfather would get a box of pennies every Sunday and go through them. Every week, without fail. And, even though I never got to meet him, I feel like I know him. And, I think about him each time I pick up a box of pennies. Happy Valentines! ~Matthew CoinRollin.blogspot.com
