As early as the 2nd-3rd c. Christian authors assimilated the Cross to a trophy. Tertullian : "<i>Per tropaeum crucis (Christus) triumphavit</i>" (<i>Adv. Marc.</i> IV, 20). Augustine: "<i>ipsam crucem de diabolo superato tanquam tropaeum</i>" (<i>In Ev.
