This coin is nothing special except for the face of Victory on the reverse and is the only reason I purchased the coin (BTW it cost me a whopping $5 plus shipping). Victory on all my other City Commemorative's is non-distinct and faceless. On this one she has a face. CONSTANTINOPOLIS COMMEMMORATIVE AE3/4 OBVERSE: CONSTANTINOPOLIS, crested, laureate helmeted bust of Constantinopolis left in imperial mantle & holding sceptre REVERSE: Victory with open wings standing left, right foot on a vessel's prow holding sceptre & leaning on shield. Mintmark SMTSD Struck at Thessalonica , 330-33 AD 2.3g 18mm RIC VII 188 As a comparison, here are the reverses of a couple of my other City Comm's:
Great choice for an example of the type. I don't have an example of this very common coin, and it's precisely because I can't find a complete, well-detailed Victory for under 10 bucks. Granted though, I haven't been looking that hard - but I would have gladly paid double for yours.
Awesome jw, to find good faces on any of the coins is great, excellent coin, my first batch of ancients came from a lot of about 200 coins a few years back, these three where in there, nothing great but i only paid 2 bucks each. My 4th. coin i didn't even remember buying i been wanting one with great details, now i don't have to buy one, the second thing to go... i have about 10 of these some are in better condition..just can't find them. This one has the wolf, don't remember buying it, oh well i like it..
Nice coins John, but even in your examples the face of Victory is obsecured much like all of mine except the newest. Anyway, that is why I bought this coin. Really love the reverse on your Urbs Roma.
Now thats a nice coin Doug and a detailed face on Victory. I just haven't seen any with this type of detail until my coin came up for auction. I only wish the obverse was a nice as yours, but, I got what I paid for.
Great new addition, Bing (especially for only $5) ... seriously, did you buy this coin from a strung-out desperate junkie, or what? ... who sells their coins for $5 fricken bucks?! ... oh, congrats on another thrifty purchase, big bro. ... ummm, there's a little bit of a face showin' on my only example of this coin-type (I've always loved this coin) Oh, and that's a pretty slick lookin' face on your example too, Doug (great coins, fellas)
Gotta love the face of those Nike's. Egypt, Alexandria AE Follis, City Commemorative s.337-347 AD 2.69 g x 18 mm Obv: CONSTANTINOPOLIS, Helmeted and mantled bust of Constantinopolis left, holding reversed spear over shoulder. Rev: Victory standing prow, holding scepter and leaning on shield. Mintmark SMALA Ref: RIC VIII 17
Most evil, just maybe. Most Badass...thats a tough call, Some people out here got some crazy Nike / Victory coins. I personally my Side Tetradrachm from BC 200, these guys really captured just how badass Nike was.
