It&#039;s a Siliqua of Justinian I that was struck at Carthage after the reconquest of the province of Africa. Judging by the heavy weight it would be safe to assume that this coin was struck early on and not in Justinian&#039;s later reign.</p><p>Amazingly they were still striking Siliquae into the &quot;Byzantine&quot; era. While there are some that were struck at Constantinople up until around the death of Emperor Maurice Tiberius in 602, they were used as ceremonial coins and most likely did not circulate very much. This was not the case for the Western provinces that were recovered by Emperor Justinian, silver coins were still the primary means of economic exchange and value.&nbsp; Gold had replaced silver in the east by the early 5th century, the last major emissions of Siliquae being under Emperor Valens and the last emissions for general Empire wide circulation being under Arcadius.</p><p>Official Imperial Siliquae, and it&#039;s fractions, would continue to be struck until the late 8th century!
