Does anyone know for sure when the Devil's head was changed? I have three 1954 $1 bills and three $2 bills. Only one of them has a clear image of the devil's head. On the other bills, the hair is much softer.

When I was researching this online, most websites indicate the notes weren't modified until 1956. Is this incorrect? Were the notes actually modified in 1954 after the first ones were issued?

    Thanks.

I saw the snopes article which states they changed in 1956, but I'm not sure what accounts for a difference in the shading on the hair on the 1954's as all of the bills are of similar condition. Could it be similar to coins with some having a harder strike than others? I'm not sure what this is called for paper money.

I think the dating conventions for paper money may be confusing you. The hair may have been changed in 1956, but the notes kept on being printed with the 1954 date until whenever it was that the next series of designs was adopted. So most 1954 notes won't have the devil, since most 1954 notes were printed after 1956.

Thanks for clearing things up, Numbers. I'm a newbie, so I'm still learning. I at least have one devil's head out of the bunch.

    Governor J E Coyne, Deputy Governor G F Towers

    Governor Beattie Deputy Governor Rasminsky

There were 2 issues with the devils head on LOL
    J.E. Coyne and G.F. Towers and J.E. Coyne/J.R. Beattie

The 1st modified note was also J.E. Coyne/J.R. Beattie which can make it interesting:D

The modifications were made in 1956 check out the Bank of Canada web site

I too was looking for the fine devil in smaller size. I found one right above the ear with my magnifying glass. If it isn't another devil it sure as heck looks like a face anyway. Well it is a face and if one looks closely it appears as if some fingers are in it's left eye the best I remember or that could have been another face. It's been 5 minutes since I looked at it. Either way thanks for the info because I never even heard of this before. The first of many first to come I am sure.
