They are both good machines, but the e-trac goes down deeper.

I've never heard a bad thing about the etrac aside from the price. I have a tesoro vaquero, it gets the same depth at about a third the cost. I like the at pro though because it'll also find raw gold nuggets

Man this thread has me itching to try again. I stopped at the end of summer due to lack of motivation from doing it alone and having trouble learning but this thread has me MOTIVATED.

I'm interested in anyone really experienced with MD property issues. In short, I've heard that many public sites forbid searching (Federal, State, just National Parks???) and that stuff found on private property is the right of the owner (in addition to trespassing) unless a note or agreement is signed. So where exactly can/do you search, and how do you find out if public places allow? Is there a database or geomap of sites that are MD friendly? Any advice, suggestions, sample notes/agreements would be greatly appreciated.

    False.

The main public places that may forbid detecting is usually nation or state parks.

Schools might have an issue, if they think you're going to leave a divet that will injure children.

As far as stuff being found...good thing you don't live in some countries, anything found over a certain age belongs to the museum.

As far as keeping what YOU find, never bring it up, only agree to it if the owner mentions it.

Your spending all day sweating and digging, if the owner wants all of it, forget it, your just being a slave for him. Then when you DO find something, how do you give them 50% of a barber half?

The best thing to say is "I will let you know if I find anything of value". That way if you find something worth $1000, you can sell it and give him a percentage.

Long story short, I always show the owners what I find, so far none of them asked for anything. Maybe if it was the dad's wedding ring, that would be different.

For local parks I just get on the town website and call who is in charge of them.

You need a permit for some parks and they can be tough to get. With some parks they will not give you a permit or allow you to hunt. Land owners can be tricky to deal with. They own anything that is found so it's important to have permission and an agreement. School grounds can be tough as well. It may be legal to dig in your area but the guy that takes care of the grass may get ticked and arrange for you to have a chat with the cops. It's also important to remember that your digging tool is a weapon on school grounds. Lots of issues and laws are different from place to place.

I bought a Teknetics Gamma on Craigslist for $120 never been used. I bought my pinpointer at a local shop for $45. It works pretty well. Only went out twice last year and the ground was pretty hard by then.

The gamma appears to detect very deep coins but I'm thinking of getting the 11" DD to try and get even deeper coins.

Nervous/anxious... We just bought a Minelab E-Trac that should arrive in a few days. Now I'm just hoping that it ends up being worth the expense!

I know..probably foolish, but I got it for $1005 off of Ebay a few min ago which seemed like a decent deal. We love going out detecting, but haven't found anything exciting with our current ones. Enough are reselling in the $1250 range that we figured that we can always throw it back on Ebay in a couple of months if it doesn't work out.

They go for over $1500 on Amazon. You may even find some Chinese coins with that one.

    Good Luck!

I emailed asking for the serial number first so that I can confirm that it's not a chinese knockoff... No payment till I can confirm that it's legit.

I haven't been metal detecting myself, but I would like to try. I was thinking about starting out cheaply to see if it was something that would last. Then I began thinking like you...I don't want to waste my time with an inferior tool.

I know some guys that work for VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation). They are on the road crews that dig up ground for new roads or extensions/widenings. In other words, they have "after hours" access to freshly churned up ground. They go out with their metal detectors after hours and find all sorts of things.

They mostly find large caches of Civil War ammunition and uniform buttons. Some of the uniform buttons are quite rare. They showed me an 1807 Bust dime they found with XF details...pretty cool!

Virginia has strict laws about metal detecting for Civil War artifacts, but road work areas are somehow exempt. I think they still have to report what they find and where, but get to keep most of it. Their successes gave me the bug to give it a try.
