Wait, wait, wait... can you tell what the altered surface is?

Is the frosty cameo artificially applied or something??

I don’t know for sure but the frost being artificially applied was one of my thoughts.

That what I was thinking, maybe it's the frost that was the Altered Surfaces.

This was a good one to post.

I would guess that someone did a little bead blasting to help the cameo contrast a bit.

The coin has original surfaces, and perhaps that was the gamble I took in 1997. On Ebay at 2 AM, my MAC desk top as my sole guide, I saw one of the first of this date that did not look altered surface. Later a visit To my local Cincinnati area monthly coin show confirmed my feelings. Two of my more trusted dealers looked and offered me what would have been a nice instant profit. Both thought the trade off of damaged rims was worth it, as it is hard to find the coin in XF 45 or above. There is no scratch, perhaps the lighting I used created the image. I tilted to be sure the rim damage was apparent. I paid $275, was offered $500. Beefer has grade and damaged rims for two points. 20171031_161912.jpg

...and it looks like @ron_c gets the win!

@Charles REid , it's the price that gets the win, and the point. But I'm happy to know that I hit it for the grading! Good post.

Got to pass again. So anyone else or Beefer since he had the other two guesses right.

How about another PCI holder...a Hawaii Dime...the scratches are on the holder (hint: the coin is not scratched)...so price sold? details? or not? reason? grade?

XF corrosion, $ sold, $100. To my knowledge PCI did not use detailed as a description so no details, noted.

If i'm correct, and I could certainly be wrong, PCI used a different color label in lieu of the word 'Details', so if it is in a red (I think?) border label, it's the same as calling it details, and they would also (again, I think) put the reason on the label. SO a PCI details coin would be in the red(?) label with a designation of why it has that label.

That is correct. PCI details coins were placed in red label holders. Some of those were very conservative and I've heard stories of people cracking those holders and receiving straight grades at PCGS/NGC/Anacs.
