Are these two coins the same exact ones??? Is there a difference I'm missing? Both coins are MS61 1858-S Liberty $20 PCGS Number 45944689 and compare that with PCGS Number 46519247
I would think that the "Fairmont Collection" would command a slight premium? I guess the prior owner didn't want that label or he was rolling the dice and hoping for an upgrade. I guess this would be a true "MS61" then. FYI, my LCS is offering it for $7500...so I was doing research on it and checking out auction results and I came across the prior photo. It appears it's being offered for the same price that it was bought for at auction
That coin does not look like a very strong 61, keep in mind that the price difference between AU and UNC is quite large. I personally would wait until a nicer example shows up. Here is another MS61, this one has less contact marks: https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/lots/view/3-13WRSC/1858-s-liberty-head-double-eagle-ms-61-pcgs
Surprisingly it went for less. There's definitely a softening in the market, it appears. Would PCGS be able to conserve the coin and remove the dirt in the date?
Thank you! I'm getting back into collecting and I am attempting to finish my Type 1 Liberty Double Eagle set within the next 5 years! (one for each year in Type 1, that is. I don't have enough $$ to do each mint within the year!)
