    That’s amazing, I appreciate you sharing your diligence and research. I wonder what the population of genuine survivors might be and also, do the TPGs pay folks who bought them based on their guarantee of authenticity? Finally, who is making the high grade fakes, especially the early ones as shown in that old Newman article? Such an interesting inquiry!

    I don't believe Newman or anyone else determined the source of the fakes...

    The original owner bought it as a "struck copy" from Stacks', had it certified and sold it to another. The TPG guarantee made the owner then whole, and the coin was returned "unslabbed" to the original owner for reimbursement of the selling price.
