That settles it. I’m going back. :)

How were the prices at the antique store?

The thing that upsets me it that I have relatively little knowledge on Roman coins, so I don’t know what exactly I am looking at. The descriptions are usually in another language, so I can’t glean more info than the basic ID.

Well, I'm not that competent to evaluate this, but I found them to be rather high, unfortunately. Still worth a visit!

I am assuming you are an American: Remember, all Retail Prices will include an approx 20% VAT dependent on Country. Save receipts, and you you can apply for VAT Drawbacks when you return to the US.

You're right, applies to us Canucks too. Unfortunately I am seriously allergic to paperwork and tend to put it off indefinitely...:banghead:

I remember, about 10 years ago, I had to plant a crimson king maple tree for a client. They had a 2 acre back yard, so I picked my spot and started to dig a rather large hole. My hole was about 90 cm. wide/ 90 cm deep, but I had to dig down 15 cm to fit root ball. OK, I hit a flat object, to my surprise it was a rusty iron chest (like a pirate treasure chest) Of course, my thought was a treasure chest:happy: To my utter disappointment, the chest was empty:( would have been super nice to have found that Trier hoard in my backyard, digging a hole.....all those aurei would be part of John's coll.:)

With regard to coins (sold above face value), Germany was a strange exception in the European Union until a few years ago: The reduced VAT rate of 7%, usually for stuff like foods and books, applied to coins too. Oddly enough, medals have always come with the full VAT rate. That changed at the beginning of 2014, so now you pay 19% on both coins and medals. (Usually; there are exceptions.)

Here is more info (German customs, English language version) about how to get that VAT back if you are not an EU resident. But yes, this does involve dealing with paperwork. ;)
