PS @Stork - Cathy- that's awesome! I have never, ever found a Merc dime in change. As you can see from my previous post, I've found several in the ground over the years, but from circulation? Nope! That would make my day.

Sorry to be a broken record, and to keep yanking us back to the same theme.

It's just that the only twentieth century material I have imaged right now tends to be from my detector finds album.

@Dave M- I've always liked those little 1848 centimes. Quite the pivotal year. And attractive coins. I was happy when I found a nice mid-grade circ of that type in a bulk lot not too long ago.

@Stork- maybe it's just my whimsical eye, but the torch on that coin type you posted always looked to me as though Marianne lost the top scoop off her ice cream cone when a sudden gust of wind blew towards her! LOL :)

Ice cream cone - hah! That coin does have "which way is up?" issues, but now I'll remember it as the ice cream coin :)

They've always been "the ice cream type" to me.

(Not to be confused with the legendary Daggett specimen of the 1894-S US dime, popularly referred to as "the Ice Cream Specimen", which escaped into circulation when Mint director Daggett's daughter allegedly spent the ultra-rare branch-mint proof on ice cream.)

Aha! 1898 gives me an opening to play another from my "Box of 20" (the cheapest one from the box, but it happens to be the second-finest graded for the date and type):

You can follow this with 1824, CAR or any of the countries that comprised the CAR such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Mexico (due to the part that became the Mexican State of Chiapas), or the predecessor Captaincy General of Guatemala of the Spanish Empire.

I can do CAR (once). It's 1846/2, so I suppose either date would be okay :D. Same as above for the eligible follow-ons.

No my best photography efforts, but it is the only picture I have of a 1842 coin.
