Netherlands East Indies, about 120 years later! A 1943 (with a D mint mark - I do believe that is Denver) one-gulden (KM 330). gulden-01-1943D-km330.jpg

    DEA old buddy, I think yours is a Netherlands issue, Denver mint. Here is a 1945 Netherlands Indies S mint 1/4 gulden for example. 1945 S NI 1-4 g obv.JPG 1945 S NI 1-4 g rev.JPG

Thanks, Ed! I truly appreciate your attention. When I got that coin I had difficulty placing it. However, after scratching what hair follicles I had left right off my scalp, I figured it out with a KM catalog. To wit, "World War II Coinage - Netherlands and the Netherlands East Indies coins of the 1941-45 period were struck at U.S. Mints (P - Philadelphia, D - Denver, S - San Francisco) and bear the mint mark and a palm tree (acorn on Homeland issues) flanking the date. The following issues, KM#330 and KM#331 are of the usual Netherlands type, being distinguished from similar 1944-45 issues produced in the name of the Homeland by the presence of the palm tree, but were produced for release in the colony." This is seconded by Numista - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces36509.html - so I am feeling a good 95.674% certain . . . . .

Begging your pardon, senor! Seems I learn something every day, especially when I make erroneous statements! I have collected a lot of coins of the Netherlands and the colonies, including VOC. Perhaps I need to research them more carefully.

Wow, that one fooled me but thinking about it in the context of WWII it makes sense. The Netherlands were under Nazi occupation at the time so that silver coin may not have seen release there in 1943. Just a guess but it would be similar to the Danish coins struck in England for use in The Faeroe Islands during the war while the coins used in Denmark were zinc issues.
