This about hits it on the head. Its like saying, "what percentage of the population of the Earth surfs internet on at least a yearly basis". Would it be 50%? 10%? Way too high. Important not to distort these questions by noting that quite a few people in North America surf internet, and deciding that this percentage globally would have to be similar. China, India, Nigeria, Indonesia, have vast numbers of people, many of which would never in their lives have the time or money to collect or do anything beyond except what is needed to survive and retain a sense of cultural identity. We are extraordinarily fortunate in developed countries to be able to partake in such personally enriching activities.
"My coin question now. In your opinion what percentage of households in the world have at least one coin collector. I would consider a collection to be five or more coins and the household can be a large extended family or as small as one person." It's tough to determine. If there are about 6 billion people, and perhaps an average of 4 people per extended household, that would equal about 1.5 billion households or about 150 million "collections" world-wide. I don't know any family [even the families that don't consider themselves collectors] that doesn't have a few coins that are saved for sentimental reasons or because they were grandpa's or because they are silver or because they are wheat cents or because they are state quarters or because they were picked up traveling in another country or whatever other reason they have been saved other than for spending on next week's groceries. I would think there are probably 150 million people in the USA alone that have at least 5 coins saved for some reason. Or maybe I misunderstand the question.
No Sir , you didn't misunderstand the question. Having an indebt knowledge of numismatics is not required, just a group of 5 or more coins which have some sort of meaning or value to the holder, sentential or otherwise. I think some are trying to place too much emphasis on the definition of numismatics. A simple collector can be just that. A simple collector. For example, We (My Brother or I since my mom passed) have a Chinese Chippendale mahogany love seat, claw-n-ball feet, hand carved. Belonged to my great grand-mother. I don't know exactly when it was constructed (1700s??? I guess) or what country it was made in. I do know (documentation is in storage) it's a Chippendale, therefore considered an antique collector in some circles and not a collector in others. The loosest interpretation of 5 special coins applies here Take Care Ben
We take a lot for granted! "If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep .. you are richer than 75% of this world." "If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy." "And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity." Also "If you woke up this morning with more health than illness ......you are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day." "If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ... you are ahead of 700 million people in the world" "If you can attend a church meeting without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death .. you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world." "If your parents are still alive and still married .. you are very rare." "If you have children who love and respect you, you are unique in providing well in you responsibilities in parenting, you are blessed." "If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you are unique to all those in doubt and despair." If you can read this message you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all.
Last evening, while listening to Michael Savage on the radio he mentioned that 30% of Americans collect coins. Albeit he was hawking Swiss America or some such gold selling company I find that number incredibly high!
