If only that were true, these days there are way too many wealthy thieves. The numbers in the coin industry second only to Wall St.
Perhaps, but in this case, KJ is on the money. This has nothing to do with "wealthy thieves" and everything to do with pointing the finger and complaining. The OP's chosen title says a great deal about his beliefs.
Junkie, $3000 for a year? I'm going to assume your country club membership doesn't include golf rights or equity... My ClubCorp membership costs me about $680 a month these days, and all that gets me is free dinner/round of golf at associate clubs NOT in my area. The much better deal is $3500 for a lifetime golf membership at Riviera Golf Club in the Philippines. I was tempted to purchase two memberships, but I couldn't figure out who to put the second membership card under. There's a slight chance I misheard them and will get a bill at year end for another $3500, but I'm thinking I'm okay.
I think he thinks it's a "rich man's ANA." Sort of like you and I would buy a Chevy but a "rich man" would buy a Ferrari. A Ferrari must therefore be a "rich man's Chevy." Yeah, I'm confused too.
Not too long ago, I bought a life membership with the RCNA, which was not cheap. I don't see it as elitism, I see it as a means to give something back to the hobby. The RCNA does a number of things to support the collecting community and promote numismatics in Canada, I suspect the same goes for the organization in this thread... http://www.rcna.ca/join.php
The ANA is more of a collector organization. The ANS is more academic and for serioua research. It is also for collectors but at a much higher level. I am a life ANA member and a corporate ANS member. The ANS hosts some incredible talks which are second to none. They have one of the best numismatic libraries in North America and they have some of the greatest minds in numismatics. On any given day you may find a literal who's who of numismatics using their library or volunteering. David Hendin, the foremost expert on Jewish ancient coins is there at least once a week as a volunteer. You really do get what you pay for. I enjoy the ANA but get more out of my ANS membership because I enjoy digging deep into subjects. Alfred Sent from my SM-N900P using Tapatalk
