I didn't do it for me Ruben, not in any way. I did it for everybody else. But thanks, I appreciate the sentiment. As for the FAQ you mention, that's what the search function is for. Forums tend to get boring if you keep posting the same stuff over and over.
Newbies though are stupid. All of us. And they blunder into the fattest forum without reading anything and ask if they should clean their coins (with or without cement mixer). An FAQ in their face is the only way it gets their attention. Ruben
Although, what we could do is have a sticky thread at the top of one of the boards (a locked sticky thread so no one can add to it)...that is full of links to good FAQ threads. Sort of like this thread from another forum I visit on occasion: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1197423715 That way, when threads with really good info come up there is quick and easy access to them because sometimes the search function is a little hard to sift through. Also, since the thread will be a locked sticky...only a mod will be able to edit it and that way it won't get a bunch of random people asking questions on the FAQ thread itself. Just a thought. I don't by any means mean that GD go through the whole forum hunting down useful threads...but what I mean is as useful threads come up we can PM a mod and if it is deemed worthy they can add it to the post at their leisure. I'd be happy to keep an eye out for useful threads for such a post.
Sort of, but it seems that the winning thread is sometimes a thread that is neat and not always a thread that contain just useful information. Also, to be perfectly honest with you...I have no idea where to find that thread and I doubt many others do. An example of what I mean is the question about the large date/small date 1982 Lincoln cents. I think I have answered that question 20 times...I even have pictures saved in my photobucket account just for that question because it comes up a lot. That is a thread that would fit well in a FAQ sticky. It's not a thread that's going to win TOTW but it is useful.
First forum section there is on the index page - Index Page - it's called Announcements Richie - I understand your point. But if everything had it's own section or a sticky thread, then you would have 2 pages to scroll thru before you ever got to a new post. And think about how quickly everything get's buried and how fast by posts that are newer. It just doesn't work. And as I said before, probably 95% of the questions that get asked here can be answered by looking in the Numismatic Resources section. Why list it all again someplace else ? Everything there is on this site can be found by using the Search function - but people seldom look it up. They just ask their questions. So even if you did as you are suggesting, they wouldn't look it up there either, they'd just ask their questions.
I;d put it where you have the "how to post your Pictures" They seem to read that. Understand, I don't care what anyone does. I enjoy the forum as is. If you find this useful, great, if not, forget about it. Ruben
I understand your point Doug, but I think one of the reasons people don't go to the FAQ section is when you scroll down the main page you see there is 21 threads in it. While, if I look at Coin Chat and US Coins Forum I see 6943 and 11790 threads respectively. If I was looking for information...or had a question to ask, I would go to where there seems to be more going on. I also had no idea that the announcements board had anything of value in it...I just clicked on it for the first time and I have been a regular here for over 2 years. So, that's why I thought that an FAQ sticky thread would be the way to go. I never thought that you would just add a new post when a new topic came up, I figured the way to go would be to edit the original post. That way there was a single long post with lots of links in it. As the post got longer, it would be organized to be easier to navigate but in the end it would be long. But, I think it would get a lot of views if it was in a board where people actually went. The only problem would be is if this forum software doesn't allow threads to be edited once they reach a certain age (even by mods and admins). I would even be happy to manage such a thread. I've just seen other forums do this with great success.
Hey BQ? What's your opinion on authenticity of this 1909-S VDB: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Huge-Replica-190...39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Jack would probably love that one! :thumb: Ribbit
I guess that is the difference between me and a lot of other people then. When I go looking for information I look everywhere and read everything. I tend to find a lot more that way.
You can actually read and write. That puts you way ahead of the people your writing the FAQ for Ruben
Well, I just thought that information should be in the place where the most people look...but I'd imagine that more people would simply ask the question without looking in a FAQ thread even if it was stickyed right above their post.
I guarantee that most of them would. In another coin forum I go to sometimes the usual question about having a two headed or two tailed coin kept coming up. This forum had both a FAQ thread that contained the answer information about them, AND a specific stickied link about them at the top of the page. Over a years time I kept track of how many times the question was asked anyway. Over the year it averaged once every three days. The worst month was asked over twenty two times. Now this was not a busy forum so when you looked at the first page or two of posts you would often see two or three weeks worth of posts with titles. So they could often see several posts asking the same question, BUT THEY WOULD ASK IT ANYWAY!. Sometimes you would see the question two posts in a row, from different people, but several hours apart. Most newbies do not search, they do not read, they just post their question. And often in the wrong forum.
