    Although I became interested in coin collecting when I saw the first Roman coins that my father dug at Pompeii in the '50's as a volunteer, it was my pious grandfather who truly interested me in.....yep.....wheat backs. He ushered at every Sunday mass and counted the bounty with a scrutinizing eye afterward. He exchanged his own money for buffalos, Indians, wheat backs, and all other interesting bills and coins which would inevitably fall into the parish basket. Now, forty years later, he is gone and I find myself with some 150 wheat backs and a 1992 D and P CAM or two. I am fortunate to learn so very much from the members of this site. I thank you deeply for showing me, a disabled individual, that one may have a fulfilling hobby (if only picking from 5,000 pennies daily as a start) whether one is mobile or not. With Great Appreciation and Respect,

    Thanks for the excellent article and comments. My wedding gift was this coin, and when I tell people I received a cent for a wedding gift, it provides some entertaining conversation. Even for those not engaged in numismatics, there are many aware of rarity of the 1909-S VDB cent (and 16-D merc and of course the 1913 V nickel).

    @Dimedude2 , cool story.

    I'm not a copper guy. I enjoy silver. The early coppers, conder tokens and HT tokens are growing on me though. Silver dollars are what got me into this hobby, not copper. As a kid, I wasn't very interested in plugging holes with circulated coins either. Money was scarce enough that the little I did have was spent on things I wanted.

    The joke is on them;)
    I'm not a fan of copper coins, so if I were to buy a $1k coin it would most likely be a MS silver type coin.

    I have a 1909 with what appears to be a weakly struck VBD. From a straight on view you can
    l have a 1909 that appears to be weakly struck. From straight on you can't see the VDB but from an angle it shows up. Why is this possible? See photos. 20150523_114654.jpg 20150523_114654.jpg 20150523_114654.jpg 20150523_114850.jpg

    Every time I read something like this, I cringe. Obviously, there are a lot of folks who haven't had enough hard knocks in life to feel so GD entitled......if you grew up in an environment that was less forgiving regarding feeding one self and clothing oneself and having to scrape and save for just the basic necessity's of life, they wouldn't have the cavalier attitude of throwing money (cents) away. I can't believe the attitude of some people.
