The cognate verb is <a href="http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0057%3Aentry%3Dkhru%2Fssw" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.04.0057%3Aentry%3Dkhru%2Fssw" rel="nofollow">κηρύσσω</a> (kerusso; <i>to be a herald</i>, <i>to proclaim</i>, <i>to be an auctioneer</i>). The etymology of is unknown, but has been taken to be akin to the Sanskrit <i>kāru</i>, meaning <i>singer</i> or <i>poet</i>. This is rejected by Beekes.
