Having been in Law Enforcement 30 years, It's my guess some punk ripped off a personal coin collection and spent his booty on whatever. There is really no logical way that coin would be circulating today in that condition.

Maybe Scott Travers passed through his town. He likes to put collector coins into circulation. They don't have to be stolen to be found in a cash register

 

And the look on your face when they hand you a dime and refuse to give you back the 3-cent piece would have been priceless!!!!

 

I've had this thing for four days now and I think I've become obsessed with it. The darn thing creeps into my thoughts all the time. Stuff like what are the odds it would actually come into the possesion of someone who knew what it was first of all, how lucky that the tellers fingers landed on that one "dime", and I still wonder where it came from. I actually contacted the Sherrifs office to see if anyone had reported a stolen coin collection. No one had thank God as I would hate to give it up. I've now put it in the safe hoping out of site is out of mind. Besides my wife is getting pretty tired of me telling the story to evrybody who will listen. Well heres hoping that something like this happens to all of you.

Everyone here has a story like that. Might not be quite as impressive as a 3-cent piece, but that can't all be number 1. I personally have found 6 Barber Halves in the last year. 1 was in XF and 1 was in VF. I seen posts in other forums of people finding Seated Liberty's, Stone Mountain commemoratives, Washington Carver Commemoratives, 1892-1893 colombian exposition commemoratives, etc... I have to restrain myself when I think to myself why haven't I found one of those. I dream of finding an early silver commemorative. But I realize I have found my fair share too in my lifetime (and I'm still young, I hope). I've found congressional commemoratives (copper clad), Franklin Proofs, error notes, etc...)

Just realize this. You found that coin for one simple reason, you were paying attention (and that's a very good trait to have).

The closest I can say is that my wife works at Wendy's and one day a year or so ago, some kids came thru the drive thru and gave her 3 Peace dollars and a Morgan dollar. One of the Peace dollars is definitely uncirculated the others were at least XF. She has also come home with some silver dimes and couple of half dollars. Nothing like this though. But definitely some kids got into someone's coin collection.

 

yeah....this is kind of amazing. I think I would start hyperventilating.

 

Now that's going the extra mile. Fate couldn't have smiled on a better guy that day. :thumb:

Some here may remember my story:

In the summer of 1994 I got an 1865 3 cent piece out of the cash register at work, along with 36 Roosies, Mercs, and Barbers. I nearly freaked out.....

Scratch that, I did freak out.

Wow! I have never found any good stuff like that. So far I have found the following in pocket change:

1938 Swiss 10 Rappen
1994 Bermuda 25 Cents
2003-S Alabama Proof
1953 $5 Silver Certificate
2000 Somalia 5 Schilling
A few silver Roosies and Washingtons
lots of wheat cents, best one 1921-S in VG
lots of Canadian

My brother once got a 1905 Liberty Head Nickel in change, and my sister also got a 1953 $5 Silver Certificate
