Got myself some new pickups for upgrading my type set yesterday. Well, two are most likely going to be permanent upgrades (the 3cn and shield nickel) and the 1859 IHC is in much better condition than my current one but still could easily be upgraded down the line. Also got an 1864 2-cent piece with what seems to be a RPD but I haven't poured over that yet.

What I did notice immediately when putting my shield nickel under the scope is the date. There's also something going on above the bottom of the shield (behind the vertical lines) as well as the leaves on the side of the shield. The reverse has some kind of doubling on the stars, too. It looks like maybe it was a weak strike because the denticles on the reverse are almost non-existent. Regardless, it is easily the nicest shield nickel I own now and will be put into my 7070 in the near future.

Then there's the 3 cent nickel. Definitely looks to be mint state, especially in-hand, but I saw it's got a nice cud on the obverse. I saw that in the shop and thought it would be nice to have a coin with a small cud, as I don't really have anything substantial cuds, so I bought that as a nice upgrade coin. Got home, put it under the scope, then looked at the reverse and saw several die cracks and the beginnings of another cud! Score!

    I just wanted to share here before heading out for the day in the off-chance you all wanted to take a look at these. I know I'm happy with them! Have a nice Thanksgiving everyone! 1866 Shield 5C Obv 13MP.JPG 1866 Shield 5C Rev 13MP(1).JPG 1866 Shield 5C Obv 13MP zoomed(top).JPG 1866 Shield 5C Obv 13MP zoomed(center).JPG 1866 Shield 5C Obv 13MP zoomed(bottom)(1).JPG 1866 Shield 5C Rev 13MP zoomed(top).JPG 1866 Shield 5C Rev 13MP zoomed(center).JPG 1866 Shield 5C Rev 13MP zoomed(bottom).JPG 1881 3cn Obv 13MP Cud.JPG 1881 3cn Rev 13MP Cud and Cracks.JPG

So this year's shield nickel is apparently loaded with different varieties, none of which seems like a good match for anything so far. I'm seeing a RPD and doubling on the shield and leaves, arrow point, and maybe on the motto slightly. Are those lines inside the bottom of the shield from manufacturing the die? On the reverse, a star (be E in cents) is slightly doubled.

If anyone wants to shed some light here, it would be appreciated! Thanks again and I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I just took another look at it under my scope and saw there's some slight doubling on the motto, too. I'm not finding any pictures on pcgs that match whatever variety this coin is and I'm not seeing much other information on other sites like ngc or the shieldnickels website.
