This coin was struck in 1950 and issued posthumously. He was never crowned Rama VIII in his lifetime, being assasinated before the coronation. His brother, Rama IX, posthumously declared him Rama VIII, and struck these coins in 1950 dated 1946 so that people would have coins of him.

Thailand 1/4 (2), 1/2, 1 Baht... I have always liked the elephants on these coins. especially the 1 baht's.
Nice topic. I also like the elephant coins. I had a large, half dollar sized one but didn't know they had a smaller one. I also owned a strange Hungarian Mint half ounce Thailand medal but recently sold it for bullion. I probably should have kept it but after showing a few medal and world dealers, I got the impression it was just worth bullion
Just added the 1986 1 Baht coin to my collection to complete the Y#183 set, 1986 - 2008. This coin is low mintage compared to the rest.

The dating system is the Buddhist calendar. My mother in law was born on 2500, (1957), so always easy for me to do the conversion.

I recently bought about 60 Thai commenorative coins, mostly 10 baht denomination. All UNC in holders, I think they are called "flips". There was not much sport or searching involved, I just went to see a dealer and told him to please sell me one of each such coin he had in stock. I could post all of them on here, one at a time, however the pictures are not all that clear as I leave them in their holders. Here is a 1977 (2520) 10 baht in commemoration of the graduation of Princess Sirindhorn. Mintage 2,097,000.
1957=2500 Buddhist calendar. Remember this and the dating is simple. It works for other Buddhist countries as well.
I just use the internet, goggle something like "Thai year 2556" and bingo, there it is. Same for Japan, Arabic, Chinese Ming Guo, any country that uses a different type of year. Thailand's Buddhism is based on the Theraveda type, from Sri Lanka. When you walk in the front entrance to the Mount Lavinia Hotel near Colombo, this image of the animals in a circle is portrayed at your feet, much larger in size.
