I also used Bonanza for a while but was not happy with the results. Here is a tip some may not know about. Powerpoint or Word has a function to remove backgrounds which works as well as the most expensive software, like Photoshop.
I ended up just cruising surplus/scrap stores until I found something workable. Looking for new stuff on Amazon or eBay, I could never find anything cheap that looked sturdy enough, or vice versa.
In either Word or Powerpoint, drag and drop your raw photo onto the page. Under Format Picture just click Remove Background. It will open up a selection box, just highlight your entire photo and it does most the rest. It takes a little fiddling to make it work, but when you figure it out it only takes seconds. Some photos you will need to select areas to keep or delete (it depends on how good your photo is). When done, right click your image and save. Simple.
Nice. I just use a regular digital camera with a manual focus but I see the benefits of a DSLR. Good job
Wow, that was beyond easy, it saves as a word document and I do have a few additional steps to figure out. I have the current version of Office, it had a little difference. I could not find "remove background" but I typed it into the help window and it came right up. Thank You Very much.
using @Ken Dorney suggestion I created this primarily using word. I am so pleased with the result. My camera is Lumix GF1 and the macro lens is 30mm
I still maintain that it is easier to shoot the coin on the background you want. I reshot an illustration of my coin supports including a pen of the type that was used to produce the coin holders on top of the two dowels of differing lengths for coins of different sizes. They are stuck in a hole in a block of wood and pass through a small hole in the background material. Other topper supports can be made for special uses. The one laying to the left has a hollow center and is handy for cash photos. You can spend all you want on fancy camera stands and rails but none will have less vibration than wood.
