It was actually a pretty "nice" example, but what passed for "nice" in that period was ridiculously primitive.</p><p><br /></p><p>I guess they were too busy with conquest and civil war and stuff like that to pay attention to making quality coinage.</p><p><br /></p><p>Also, the mint was probably a rather terrifying place to be employed, as noted in your anecdote.
