Looking to get some input on my Quarter. Is it copper washed, improperly annealed planchet, or a high schooler's science project? Does a coin like this have much value as an error? Any input is greatly appreciated! I have a few more clad coins with copper showing on the outer layer. I'll post them as I get time in the next day or so.
Well, for starters, it's really red! The coin needs to be weighed before analysis can begin. Otherwise it's pure speculation for me to suggest anything other than perhaps it's been copper plated. Missing clad layers would have been a much weaker strike as the coin would have been noticeably thinner. As it sits, the strike looks fairly strong.
I see what your saying. But isn't the clad layer have some thinkness to it? I think if the clad layer was dissolved, the copper core would have very weak, if any details. I think the most likely explanation, without a weight, is a botched copper plate job.
The weight as per a Dillon D-terminator scale = 5.67 grams. I don't believe it was plated, nor do I think that it had a chemical put on it. Like Hamman88 said, the details are strong and clear on both sides.
