    United Republic of Tanzania is a big African country. It's area is 945203 sq.km. and population more than 48250000. Tanzania became an independent state at April 26 1964 as Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. At October 29 1964 this country was renamed the Republic of Tanzania.
    This country has an own currency - shilling. 1 shilling = 100 senti (cents).

    When I visited Tanzania in 2015, there didn't seem to be many coins in circulation, probably due to inflation (at the time, 1800 shillings = 1 US dollar). The only coins I ever saw were these 100 and 200 shilling coins:

    Interesting that the coins from the 80s featuring Nyerere do not mention his name but simply say "rais wa kwanza" (Swahili for "first president"). The later ones with his successor Mwinyi simply have his portrait ...
