In recent Nomisma Auction/ I put down a proxy bid of 3K euros on this coin. I found out that I lost the coin during live auction/ winning bid 3200E Two days ago / auction house said coin was still avaliable to me/ since winning bidder did not want to pay for it. So I ended up getting/ imagine a US gold coin that was unique/ price would be 7 figures. Repubblica del Florentia (Florence) AV Scudo d'oro del sole ND Firenze Mint Cosimo I de Medici/ Granduca di Toscana 1537-74 Crowned de Medici Coat of Arms/ adorned with Scrolls COSMVS.MED.R.P.Floren.DVX.II* Ornate Floriated Cross NOBIS.DEI.VIRTVS 3.37g. 26mm. .986 12h Unlisted (Unique) RRRRR
I would have asked what the winning bid would have been had the non-paying high bidder not participated. You might not have maxed out your EU3000 bid.
I bid on an Early Dated goldgulden a few years ago. I was the under bidder. My bid was 4000 euros. Went for 4400 Euros. Long story short, I paid 3600 Euros all in. Quite happy.
I remember CNG Triton XVIII (Adams Coll.) some guy from the Emirates won a slew of rare AV coins with unrealistic high bids/ then in end did not pay for his lots. Most coins later ended up in Heritage Auction/ On my coin the 3K was the opening bid/ I am still happy to have secured it John
Probably true for a small percentage for major auction houses. Sadly, non-payers are way too common. I've had enough coins sell at major auctions and then returned to me by the auction house for non-payment to know.
