Well this isn't all of them - but here's a few.

    International Grading

    International Grading - 2

It's not so much that they grade differently as it the terminology. But many times, it seems that the grading standards in Europe are a lot tougher than they are here. Surprisingly - other times it is not. You really have to know your coins to know when to be tougher than US standards and when not to be.

And the pricing - Boy Howdy !! If you think some world coins are expensive here - sometimes you can multiply by 5 there

They are known as box coins - although that one is rather crudely made or so it appears. And they sure aint worth that kinda money

They used to do that to silver dollars in the 1800's - some would smuggle opium in them. Still some others would keep pics of loved ones inside. The nicely made examples even had hinges.

Thanks for the links, GD. I bookmarked them. It's very interesting reading. :)

I do not think it is a box coin but a novelty shop coin
I have several of those from my "magic" days when I earned some money as a close up magical performer ( all UK pennies )
    There are two sorts
The shell penny : this shell will fit over any ordinary penny and
The shell and penny were the outer side is corect and the inner penny is ground down to make a unique nested pair
Both let you make a coin disappear or make two coins out of one coin

That is blatant "keyword spamming" and is against Ebay Rules.

It will probably work against him -- most people who see that will immediately hit the back button rather than try to figure out if the seller is offering what he is looking for or got caught by the "spam".

I agree- I have also done some close up magic in earlier years and I hstill have a few of these pennies somewhere around my house.

I never had a magic set and wouldn't have even thought of that as an option. Thanks, guys. :)

That's possible of course - but it's also possible it was a box coin. Look at the space (hole) along the rim at the bottom of the pic. Kinda looks to me like a hinge may have been there yrs ago.

We'll never know for sure - both are plausible explanations.

Well there are double heads and doulble tails coins
There are coins in a bottle and you shake and they come out
There are magnetic coins ( the old french 5 francs did nicely if I remember correctly and only cost 5 francs LOL )
There are shell coins with an insert that was silver on one side and copper on the other side
Then you need a coin that is made with a hole in the middle
Bent coins , like folded around your finger
    etc

Now what is shown is a halfcrown sitting in its outer shell
Can you see were the inner coin ends and the shell shows
    1970 handwork

This guy has sold three rotated reverse peace dollars and now has another up for bid. Now I have one of these (authenticated by ANACS) and Peace dollars are my focus. Something just does not seem right about these coins. Can any of you confirm or refute my suspicions? Normally, a rotated peace dollar goes for about $300.

I suspect cast copies or perhaps Chinese fakes?

On the middle link, look at how far away the rays are from the top of the eagles back.

I don't see anything that really jumps out at me. The coins appear to be quite worn and I suspect that is the reason for the break in the rays.

But not being an error collector, I wouldn't pay the current bid for any of them.

The coin looks genuine, but worn, to me. I don't see it as VF as stated by the seller (VG at best.) I don't think this coin is worth the price he's asking.

I wonder what the tape is covering up. It looks like an NGC slab to me.

I was going to let it go on the rotated peace dollars from a couple of posts up (page 5), but I must say, especially for those new here or if anyone may ever look to buy such an item, that all of those coins are in fact chinese replicas/fakes.

The method they use to produce copies often results in a rotated die coin. You can see clearly that detail is missing (not due to wear) in the front rays of the tiarra, in the rays above the eagle's back, and around the rims. The coins also have that "mushy" appearance seen in the Chinese fakes.

Dave, I went back and looked at the one running currently and the ones that had ended. I also looked at some others running from China and I should have caught that. You are right. Lately, it's been more bust and seated liberty coinage that I have seen, so the Peace dollars got past me. I have since reported the auctions to eBay and sent an email to the seller. Thanks

I've bought a few Morgans from this seller before and they were very high quality. One of them came in a holder simliar to the one you noted above. It is a type of "custom" holder not NGC. The tape is just that, printed tape that the guy used to note the date, grade, etc. There is nothing behind it, it is stuck to the top portion of the holder.
I dealing with this dealer has always been very good and I've emailed him asking questions on numerous occasions with very honest replies.

Just to clarify, the auctions that I reported and emailed about were the ones for the Peace Dollar from a few posts back. The seller in the most recent link with the taped slab is not the one I reported. I just realized that it could be misinterpreted. :)

Just a quick update on this seller. I emailed him about the 1 Peace dollar that was still running on Saturday (1/15) explaining the problem with these auctions. The seller responded and was mortified that he had sold counterfeits. He said he really just thought he had hit a bonanza. He ended the one that was running immediately. Yet another example of an honest seller who was sucked in by these counterfeits that now abound in the U.S. :(
