For some reason I like the Lugdunum Aureliani and especially the 1st issue for Tacitus. I find them elegant in style and they are usually not that common. Here are 2 examples: TACITUS AE23mm 5.19g Antoninian/Aurelian (aVF, worn) AV: IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG; Bust right, radiate, cuirassed and draped with paludamentum REV: AEQVITAS AVG; Aequitas stg. l., holding scales in r. hand and cornucopiae in l. hand. EXE: - REF: Bastien 24, unlisted in RIC, RIC Online #3248 scarce, Lugdunum mint, 1st issue, nov. - dec. 275AD. TACITUS AE22mm 3.4g Antoninian/Aurelian (VF) AV: IMP C M CL TACITVS P F AVG; radiate, cuirassed and draped with paludamentum bust r. REV: VIRTVS AVG; Virtus stg. l., holding shield which rests on ground in r. hand and spear in l. hand. EXE: - REF: Bastien 45, RIC V-1 67, RIC Online #3270 20 specs recorded, 1st issue at Lugdunum mint, november–december 275AD.
I still have a large pile of these Tacitus coins from Lugdunum littering my hoard.... Here are a couple of emission 1 examples from my collection. PROVID DEOR, Providentia standing left, holding baton and cornucopia; at foot, globe VIRTV-S AVG, Virtus standing left, holding spear and resting hand on shield
The portraits often look too youthful for his 75 years of age. I do have the short obverse legend version of your Aequitas Others... This oddity which reads PROVID D AVG, which seems to be a hybrid of PROVIDE AVG and PROVID DEOR
Nice coins. I only have one nice Tacitus, but it's a later issue from Antioch. TACITUS Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right REVERSE: CLEMENTIA TEMP, Tacitus receiving globe from Jupiter, Z in lower centre, XXI in ex. Struck at Antioch, 275-6 AD 3.2g, 22mm RIC 210, Z
@maridvnvm would you please add the weights of your examples? Would be interesting to compare. Especially like your last PAX PVBLICA. It embodies exactly the reason why I like this Lugdunum 1st issue.
I don't have the data to hand for most of them but the PAX PVBLICA is Weight 3.90 gms and Size 22.74 mm. I will gather some of the others in the next few days or so. Am trying to focus on family today as it is my birthday...
Happy Birthday Martin!! Ummm, here is an Alexandrian version of good ol' Tacitus (it's my only example)
