I picked this mint set up on Friday and posted on newest acquisitions thread. Here are some photos of each denomination. After photographing I am still not sure if these are proof or proof like. I think they are proof but the 1 and 5 rappen don't seem to have the proof mirrors. One thing is Krause says the UNC had 22500 mint sets and 12000 Proof sets. The set says Swiss Federal Mint and Swiss Coins with unc. In English and Monnales Suisse F.d.c. in french. Would the Swiss strike the UNC sets in PL or is this a proof set?
Fleur de coin = FDC = usually proof. Of course the coins have not circulated so are "Unc" These coins appear obviously, at least to me, proof.
Swiss mint sets are exceeding high quality and can be mistaken for proof. But then the coins made for circulation are exceedingly high quality as well. It's a wonder that Swiss moderns aren't really collected. Most are pretty scarce but with no demand when they can be found they are usually very inexpensive. I've seen the FDC sets and believe they are what Krause calls Proof.
Au contraire mon ami. FDC is perfect, but proof. These are not uncirculated....Uncs can be FDC but highly unusual. If these are not proof then show me a proof.
I must admit the north half is a bit flooded with light but the south half came out out incredibly well on the second pic.
Thanks as well! I have 7 of the 9 coin set from 1974 only not in the original mint packaging. They don't look quite as nice as the proofs but a little more PL than your uncirculated set. I will post.
"with the bloom of the die" I believe some FDC's are considered Proof, some Unc, and some SMS dependent on the whims of collectors and catalogers. Some, like French, FDC's are just listed as "FDC" and usually look more like SMS than Unc or PR. I really should know since Swiss is one of my specialties but the coins all tend to be so nice and their origin isn't always apparent. Plus I've never intentionally bought a Swiss Proof set though I think I have one somewhere. Terminology has never interested me that much.
