I have recently acquired a couple of old Swiss shooting medals and I love them. I'd really like to learn more about them and continue to collect these, but I am having the hardest time finding out information to educate myself. I've only found books that focus on the thalers with monetary values attached, and have learned some basics of the catalog R#'s of the medals but nothing too specific.

Can anyone recommend a website I can go to or a guide I can purchase or anything so I can study up and collect wisely?

    Thanks in advance!

Here's an interesting site that has pictures of a lot of them. You can explore and see what you can find. http://www.shootingmedals.com/

I love these too. I collect coins with bears and there are several of these with bears on them. I have two 1885 switzerland 5 francs.jpg 1910 bern shooting medal.jpg right now and another on the way in the mail.

That 1910 is an incredible design

If I recall, there is a CT member who has an extensive collection of the Swiss Shooting Medals and an NGC Registry Set for them. I just can't remember his username.

This is my one and only....

My first thought as well. A perfect example of Swiss medal design.

Not Swiss , but you might like it ?
    German States/Frankfurt 1862 thaler, .900 silver, mintage-44,000, KM#371, AU grade, subject:German shooting festival. I talked him down to $100.00 from $125.00 .

I thought they were cool enough because they have flies on them.

@spirityoda those medals with the flies are pretty damn cool. Did not know about them previously, but now I want a set as well

For some background info about the design see here.

Guess you have @Zohar444 in mind; this is an ancient ;) topic started by him (images now mostly gone) but he also posted such shooting festival talers elsewhere on Coin Talk. And some more posted by @LostDutchman ...

Yes had an extensive set and sold it off at some point. Great theme. There is a new edition of the Richter book which is a must have (Beautifully done) - https://www.buchhaus.ch/detail/ISBN...-Schweiz\Die-Schützenjetons-der-Schweiz-2-Bde.

Nice! - here's the only one I ever 'won', a 1970 rifle qualification badge from the Army

My favorite among the ones that I currently own. It has some rim damage but I still like it.

A good one to strive for is the Distinguished Masters shooting medal. I don't know if the new ones are the same, but back in the 60's-70's they were a little over 1 oz of gold.

I've recently started a collection of the shooting 5 franc coins, if only because I managed to snag a Dansco Switzerland Commemorative Continental Line album (Yes, they exist, apparently!). My budget is not thanking me right now!
