37 A.D., Thessalonica, Macedonia, Livia Reverse Bronze AE 23, RPC I 1567; BMC Macedonia p. 117, 75; SNG Cop 403,
I always thought "Bronze AE" was rather redundant, but I've seen so many people and books use it. I get that the name of the coin has been lost to history, but why the need to say "Bronze AE 23?" I bought a coin from a dealer that described the coin as "Macedonia Bronze AE 19." Collectors... we are a funny breed. This wasn't a knock on you, Kasia, please don't take it as such. Your guess just reminded me of the overkill of bronze, as I call it.
swish, I know next to nothing on ancients. Tonight I actually learned they write CE when they mean AD! And I learned that AE meant a base type metal, but had no idea why they were being redundant after saying this was bronze. Oh well.... 4 hours for someone else to get in here and find your coin before I can guess again.
Just wondering... have you learned what the number means, as in "AE 19" or "AE 23?" And the whole CE/AD thing is a preference based on religious beliefs. Not everyone uses CE.
We have a winner!!! Tiberius/Pontius Pilate, Judea Prutah, AE, 15mm (31AD) Obverse: [TIPERIOY] KAIC[POC] Reverse: LIH within a wreath Hendin 650 It's a bad pic, but the year is very visible in hand. wcoins, PM me your address.
Thank you!! I won!! I am not good with ancients, but reviewed the entire thread and the bit that helped me make the guess was " 3. It is a well known coin, or at least semi-well known. " The biblical coin! Thanks for the contest! I was actually thinking of buying my first ancient, this thread has helped me learn something about ancients, good start
It's not a Widow's Mite, that's a different coin. Glad you learned something. The "well known" part is the debate of Tiberius vs. Pilate, and there is a thread about it on CT. Also, there is some debate about the Shroud of Turin, and if the image has Prutahs over the eyes on that image. So, I said "at least semi-well known" because it is a topic of conversation.
I received the prize today! Thank you @swish513 for the contest and the amazing coins you sent me. They're great, especially the ancient one - my first! I even created a new thread - here
