I buy and sell on ebay regularly. I however only deal in coins certfied by the top 4 anymore, and I check the feedback of the seller for any tell-tale signs. Any doubts.......I don't bid.

Aw, please. Ebay's buyer protection isn't worth fooling with. You may be able to get part of your money back after a few months of jumping through hoops if you're lucky. Most of the hucksters selling grab bags and the other ripoff items are power sellers. A buyer who gets stiffed has little recourse and thousands of buyers get stiffed daily in that venue.

Ebay is a minefield for buyers. My advice to collectors is to stick with coin shops where you can walk back in and show the dealer why you think he gave you a raw deal.

I won't take your challenge, Bucky. I've already proven to my own satisfaction that buying anything on ebay is a crapshoot. Even the honest dealers who sell there won't refund the postage and insurance if you send a coin back, so if you're willing to pay postage and insurance both ways for the privilege of looking at a coin you wouldn't have given a second glance at a flea market, then bid away.

Nothing personal intended toward you, Bucky. I haven't ever been ripped off by you.

GOOD AFTERNOON, I have bought alot from e-bay. I sell Graded Coins ! Now If I List a 1959 Graded proof set ;All PR68 Cameos . Thats Exactly what it is .Values may be Checked. Ive Looked at Coins for 30 Years . Why would i send any Coin to be graded for at least $12 Apiece if it wasent nice.(SEGS Excluded lol) I dont want my coins overgraded either Thats A Disservice.Walking into a coin store looking and agreeing on a price is best or coin shows and auctions.MY HATS OFF to MANY GREAT SELLERS ON E-BAY.FEEDBACKS IS ALL WE HAVE ON HERE.FAIR TRADE IS A JOKE. ITS THE INDIVIDUAL SELLERS. Pirate-Cove George.......

Yes there are some good sellers on ebay. There are also hundreds of crooks. Here's a feedback tool which will help with power sellers who do dozens of deals a day and whose negatives maye be time consuming to find in the feedback files:

    http://auctiononlinedirectory.com/cgi-bin/negs

This search site will show you only the negatives and neutrals a seller got or just the negs he left for buyers. It's a big help because you can count how many "lost in the mail" complaints there are and how many times the seller says "well you should have insured it".

One seller had 15 complaints, all on uninsured coin shipments, just a coincidence I'm sure. ;-) It looked as though that seller waited for a buyer to decline insurance so he could claim he sent the coin when he didn't.

I know there are some good sellers on ebay. I also know about the crooks and the amateurs who think that refunding your purchase price less their fees is a good deal when you've paid shipping and insurance both ways after getting a coin with a hole drilled in the edge which they thought wasn't worth mentioning in the description.

Ebay is risky for the collector with limited funds whose whole coin buying budget for the week or month can be stolen from him by an unscrupulous seller and ebay will do diddly about it.

It can certainly be a challenge to become comfortable with a dealer in an internet/ebay situation.
When you find a good one stick with him/her.
Also, if you know of knowledgeable collectors who buy on ebay often, check who they're leaving feedback for. That's a good way of finding reputable dealers also.

Your ABSOLUTLY CORRECT in your statements. Ive Been With E-Bay for 4 years 100% Positive No Mutually Withdrawn Feedbacks . Most of the TIME MY BUYERS WILL NOT PURCHASE INSURANCE. I GO AHEAD AND INSURE IT FOR THEM. THE REASON FOR THIS IS IT PROTECTS ME AND MY BUYER.I feel an Obligation to any buyer .After all its his or her HARD EARNED MONEY.and I CANNOT REPLACE MOST OF MY COINS I SELL. LIKE A 49 FRANK MS 65 F.B.L. I guess there are dishonest people that will do anything for a buck.I Deal on a personal Basis not power or large quanity. QUALITY AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.Find a few that are honest ,thats all you will ever need. The Bad ones Rep.Will catch up to them. Its a shame that many will suffer in the intrim.I had one guy Sign a Return Reciept Requested and never sent . E-bay did NOTHING. POSTAL INSPECTORS DID. E-BAY IS NOT THE LAW OF THE LAND. Thanks ,George (pirate-cove)

i found a canadian coin that says Henry Hudson on the top-back and 1611 on the bottom-back.Does that mean its pretty old?

I don't know that much about Canadian coins - but based on the year and the subject I would say what you have is likely a medal of some sort that was struck in more recent years.

I could easy be wrong about this but I don't think Canada struck any coins much before the 1850's.
