Let me start by saying I’m fairly new to collecting. I know buying graded coins from a reputable dealer is the safest way, but I can’t fight the temptation to click through endless amounts of raw coins, searching for hidden treasure. I came across this 1878-CC Morgan, and it caught my attention immediately; however, after closer inspection, I found some concerns which I’ll list below. For my own satisfaction, I’d love to hear what some of you experienced guys have to say. Prove me right, or prove me wrong, either way I’m anxious to hear your thoughts. By the way, the coin was weighed at 26.78 grams and the seller is asking around MS60 price. Here’s the potential problems that I see: Obverse: 1. Date looks different to me when compared to know genuine examples. Upper portion of the 1 seems snubbed shorter than most, and both 8’s appear to have more rounded inner voids; whereas, the others were slightly elongated. 2. The stars around the perimeter are all kinds of mushy. Not crisp at all. 3. The strike detail of the ear seems rather poor. 4. There’s extra “material” for lack of a better word in and around B-U-S in PLURIBUS. 5. Overall the fields are so clean that it raised my suspicion. Reverse: 6. The CC mint looks larger than all the others of the same date and year. 7. The legs on the eagle look like they have more bands than the example coins. Has the appearance of wearing “striped socks”. 8. Super clean fields again on the back just make me feel like it’s just too good. So there you have it. Am I looking too hard, or did I sniff out a fake? Let’s hear your opinion...
sometimes a simple drop on a counter top will give away a counterfeit, it won't have the silver "ring" sound. a fake will sound like "thud" also I have picked up a few with magnets that were fake.
Peter Davis could you contact me? I tried every which way to Email you and I can't for some reason. I might need updating on here. Thanks
The flat and squishy lettering of UNUM looks "off" to me, as does the overall appearance of the coin. Smells very fishy. I believe this one deserves a gold sticker. No, not the kind CAC gives out. This kind of gold sticker:
I noticed the Stars right away but what really gives this one away is the reverse. Fake- This die pair never happened.
On the obverse, the detail in and around the hair is far too much when compared with the stars' lack thereof. Fake.
The style of the luster is completely wrong, and the rims have a mushy appearance. Closer examination on the rims revealed a bunch of raised bumps and toolmarks. This coin is not genuine. Return it if you can.
EPU and the stars on the obverse are god-awful. Very incredibly mushy and ill-defined. CC is the wrong style for 1878
Everything about it is FAKE...I asked my other half to look at it and she replied "That looks Chinese!"
This is a very easy fake to spot. Took me 10 seconds, and I found a whole list of other problems than you listed. Definitely fake.
