Is this 1980 S. Susan B. Anthony a proof or a polished coin? The bust is very mirrored, but the fields look a bit strange. I'm thinking a non-proof since proofs have immaculate dies. Unless it's a polished proof. Thanks in advance!
Polished possibly but def. not a proof as there is die deterioration everywhere from a business strike.
A 1980 proof should not have mirror devices. It looks like there's some die deterioration going on. It could be polished, but I can't tell from your pics, but it's definitely no proof.
Besides having been struck with a worn die and not the usual cameo, is anyone going to point out that the rims on this coin and its surface have NONE of the characteristics common to proofs? .
Squared flat edges! I'm glad that this wasn't anything valuable like that polished 1850 $20 gold coin from that other recent thread!
It's not even necessary to look at the rims or anything else due to the orange-peel surfaces from die deterioration. In 1980 that die would not be striking proofs, full stop. It might be pressed into service striking business strikes for the rest of its life, but not proofs.
It's not even necessary to write long texts on this POS. NO MIRROR SURFACE at all, NO SQUARE RIMS at all, NO SHARP DETAIL none at all! Coin has NOTHING that should make us even think it is a proof!
