Sunken head Roosevelt. How did this happen?

Double Die I know just enough to be dangerous

I posted this a while back, but didn't get any responses. I am employing your best guesses on how this happened? I've never seen anything like it and would like to know just what caused this???? Aside from this being a typical type 1 81 S coin, there is a highly noticeable depression in FDR's head. Since there are no visible scratches associated with the depression obverse or reverse, how the hell did this happen? Any best guesses are appreciated.

Good question! Of course, it's harder to imagine what may have cause it when the coin is behind the plastic of the 2x2.

It has got me stumped, too, but thanks for posting the extra images.

PS. You might want to invest in a flat-cinch stapler. The conventional stapler you're using could allow the points of the staple to scratch another coin if you slide one 2x2 over the mylar cover.

I ran both of those possibilities through my mind, and neither explains what I see.

One thing that comes to mind would be a delamination from a previously struck coin stuck to the die or partial capped die. Another would be struck on a damaged or foreign planchet. Have you checked the weight?

There is no fade, scratches, or any other flaws I can see.
