Wear on low end barbers can take more than 10% off the weight of the coin... but I'd say you got a solid deal, yes.
I think you would be surprised at how LITTLE weight is lost due to wear. 1% - 2% for the worst coins. I wish I could find it, but we did some weight checks about a year ago because people thought they were getting taken due buying old silver coins. Come to find out, it was nearly negligible.
If you have a tattoo that you regret getting you can have it removed. But the removal is usually more difficult, much more painful and much, much more expensive than getting the tattoo in the first place. Yes, I am speaking metaphorically. Buy the book before the coin.
Yeah man Hobo... So the guy took the coin back no questions asked. I said do you have a return poicy? He said yes and handed me $65.... So I bought 3 Barber halves...low grade's all G's...cant realy over grade those... payed whatever the grey sheets said...$45 for the three...no I got a $20 burning a hole in my pocket..hehehehheh
The coin store did not (necessarily) grade this coin. They bought it with the writing on the 2x2. It is your responsibility to grade the coin and offer a buy based on the grade you give it. The same thing happened to me back in 1993. Sitting at the counter, looking at Barber Dimes, talking to the store owner, I set them aside based on the 2x2s. When I got home and realized what I bought, I went to Edmund Scientific and spent the same amount of money on magnifiers. The dealer did not grade the coins. They were in all kinds of cardboard and plastic. It was my responsibility to know what I was buying. The dealer was an old friend and I just posted a memoriam to the E-Sylum last week (read here).
There's a thread running about it right now... some coins saw as much as 10% weight loss. Granted, those are in like, AG or so, but still...
You wouldn't care to share just which thread that is, would you? The only thread I can see basically agree with what I said, but they do not go into any detail. http://www.cointalk.com/t129328/ http://www.cointalk.com/t134368/
I found the thread you apparently are referring to; http://www.cointalk.com/t133717/. So far, the evidence says they may lose 2% - 3%.
I get that.....and that is exactly why I will continue to do business with him...... But the problem with me is I only have a small amount of time between when I get off work and when I have to pick up my girls.....So I don’t have enough time to make a confident decision....if he cant offer me at least a 24hr grace period to review my purchase then I cant do business with him anymore....luckily for me he seems to have a terrific return policy (with me at least) Yee haw
You are lucky. Many dealers would not have returned it. I think what you say about not having enough time to decide on a purchase is fair, but not if that time includes grading. If you wish to collect coins, you simply MUST be able to grade a coin in a few seconds for circulated, maybe a little longer for uncirculated. WHat I am saying is that you should have been able to see this coin is overgraded within 5 seconds of seeing it, have time to ask the dealer about the grade, THEN take your time on whether you wish to purchase it. If you cannot baseline the grade quickly, then the entire purchase decision becomes too time consuming and complex, something you say you do not have time for. By a photograde book, study hard, then start grading coins from auctions and see if you agree or disagree. Its work, but if you love coins its the best kind of work in the world! Best of luck in your journey.
Yeah your right...I need to be able to grade quickly and I cant do it at all yet (so i am sticking to low grade/slabbed coins for now)....BUT... 10 minutes or so just isnt enough time for anyone to make great decisions time and time again.... Best of luck to you to my friend!
