Yup, but I buy coins the wrong way on Ebay too. When I get a free minute I jump on and impulse buy something....you need to know what you want first...then go patiently find a good cheap one

Thanks everybody, really appreciate it. This place rocks! I am thinking it probably a VG too and an F at best. I am going to take it out of the holder and bring it to a different dealer I buy from and get an inhand grade from him….when it comes back VG I will definitely take the advice and go tell that the seller what is up.

Also if I get a chance I will try the photo bucket thing so you guys can get a better look.

    Thanks again! Ringo

Yupper…I will get the money back one way or another if he wants me to keep coming back…. like I do once a week…I am lucky were I live he isn’t the only local dealer…
If he won’t let me return it he better make up for at least some of it in future deals…
Out of curiosity do most coin shops have a return policy?
Has anyone ever tried to return a coin?

If the shop is run by an honest dealer he can do a return. He is either waiting for someone new, or believes his grade and is being way too optimistic on his grading. I've returned a coin or two to my local shop because it's just not what I expected, and had no problems. If he doesn't take a return or charges a "restocking fee" well, live and learn, and never ever go back.

I would do two things, try to return the coin and buy a photograding book. If you like this series, look at examples in a photograde book and you would have immediately known this coin is overgraded. Hey, I did it as a greenhorn too, we all do, no shame in that. The only shame is not learning from your mistakes and investing $10 in a book that will help you save $40 on your next purchase. :)

Show up in a junky car, tell him things took a turn for the worst and you have to return the coin once you return the coin never go back.

Okay the results are in...Just took the coin to another dealer who said it was a VG to F...then he offered me $4 for it..

Wow!!! since i bought it for $65 the coin lost 94% of its value overnight....very depressing indead...scary stuff

Well $4 is a ridiculous offer as well. Yes it can bescary, which is why the first thing I tell prospective collectors is to LEARN. Educate yourself, learn to grade, learn to spot problem coins. The minor error on your coin is not really worth anything, and it was dramatically overgraded. I would say the dealer you took it to was also a ripoff, offering that little for a decent barber half when melt is over $8 now. Both of these dealers would be on my "warning, scammers" list now.

Trust me, you can lose much more money than you just did. Education is cheap versus making mistakes like this, no?

Edit: My bad, forgot it was a quarter. Still $4 is low for a decent barber quarter nowadays. The first dealer is a complete ripoff, see if he stands behind his coin and will give you a refund. I sure would not want to sell to the second dealer.

A lot of dealers won't take a coin back if it's not in the original 2x2... I wouldn't have broken it out of that if I were you.

yeah man.....I agree..I was disappointed in the $4 offer too....I'm thinking I could get $15 at least on ebay....the coin market is such a shady business...maybe that’s what makes it fun???? I don’t know but that coin is going back!!!!

There is an old saying that goes like this “you sheer a sheep many times but you can only skin him once” I got skinned…

BTW – the same guy who offered my $4 sold me 3 other low grade common barber Q’s for $12. Which say’s he is buying and selling at the same price??????
But for $4 a piece and knowing the melt value I can buy them all day with confidence.
My new plan is to get a grading book and stick to junk that sells for a slight premium over melt or slabbed coins until I get my feet wet…

Your not going to be able to get your money back once you removed it from his holder. (If I read that correct you did)? Who's to say that it's the same coin (even tho we know it is). You'll probably be shown the door unfortunately. I accept returns at the shop but only within a month from the original purchase. Anything after a month or if it's not in it's original packaging gets treated as a new purchase.

Yeah, i took it out and put it back in...they probably will be able to tell that...

But I just bought this coin yesterday and it has the die crack as a distinguishing feature...combine that with that fact I am in there about twice a week if he shows me the door it will be the last time I see it....

Paying $12 for low-grade Barber Q's? I'd not go more than $6 or maybe $7. If I couldn't get it for that, I'd walk. Do yourself a favor, skip redbook, and use either numismedia (free price guide!) or get the greysheet (expensive, but it's what dealers use).

I sold $75 face in low end barber quarters, halves, and dimes for melt the other day.

Johnny, I wish you the best of luck...hope for the best but expect the worst... an honest straight shooting dealer wouldn't have sold that coin for that price.

Thank you my friend! If silver is trading at $24.43/oz and the quarter contains .18084oz of silver than I caluculate the melt value to be $4.4...which is more than I paid...Holly crappolla did I actualy get a good deal?
