I know this may not be popular but I think what the mint did was the right thing to do based on the numbers ND86 said they received. I think one of the flaws in this may have been that the initial research didn't include giving a free collectors box on the first proof set, I think that was a large factor in many orders. Also the fact that you could almost corner the market by subscription alone might have helped push may orders. As it is now everybody will be waiting for D Day on the orders for the first coin so the mint better have the staff get plenty of sleep the night before. I was actually hoping nobody cared about these coins ands I was the only one to order but no such luck.
I find it hard to believe that a storage box would strongly influence the purchase of an item that costs $1675 per year; more than $17,000 over the course of the 10 year program.
I think it influenced some for the purchase of the proof set for this first year, I doubt it meant they would have had to continue with it though due to the box alone as many were buying the coins to flip and that included the box. It makes more sense to have the box for individual coins anyway as the sets already had boxes. I like the new plan just hope they don't raise the max mintage much more next year [but I expect they will]. Here is a picture of the box they had for the spouse coins-
