Let's call the mint officials and tell them they've won the Publisher's Clearinghouse grand prize. Then a week or so later, let's call them back and tell them "just kidding". But we'll invite them to enter again in June.

They'd be kicked off of Ebay for this kind of behavior.

Maybe they couldn't get all the special collector boxes they promised so had to dump the whole set idea. I think it may actually be best for the series though as now each coin will sell only what the real demand is without sets propping them up. Some coins could have low mintage and be great down the road.

I thought they had time to get the boxes, since they weren't promised until August. Do you think they'll offer single coins by subscription?

I know the boxes were only for proof but they couldn't just cancel one and not both. But I can't see why they wouldn't do the individual coins by subscription now, I only hope they limit it to one per person this time.

First Spouse One-Half Ounce Gold Proof Coins – Four-Coin Set
The United States Mint has made a decision to not make available proof and uncirculated four-coin sets for the First Spouse Program in 2007, thus also eliminating the 2007 subscription program. If you have enrolled in the subscription program, you will be notified by the United States Mint of the cancellation. Individual product options will be available beginning June 19, 2007 at 12:00 Noon (ET).

If that is true I for one will be quite displeased with them (the US Mint making friends and influencing people).

Talk about a total lack of ethics, that is just plain wrong!!

I think we'll find out that there is a lot of truth in this statement. For if the mintage limit was reached by subscription orders only then the mint would have little choice but to cancel those orders. If they didn't there would truly be huge uproar made by the people who had no subscriptions.

I suspect they did this in the interest of fairness and that orders will be limited on the scheduled release date.

I agree, if they did cancel it all for the sake of fairness... that IMO is just the right thing to do. Dealers, yes, they are open to make money any way they can, will just soak all the sets up and sell them for a huge profit. order limits will hopefull be imposed. And i dont mean 10 or 25 like they have had in the past... im thinking 1 or 2 would be a nice limit. that would surely bring balance to the amount of sets sold to the dealers and to the public.

I offer my opinion as an outsider, i will be unable to get a set for myself, so i have no reason to wish these limits or changes to be made othen than for open fairness.

Great Comments - This will help us get back to the hobby and the history and culture of coins and collecting.

Fairness is the last word I'd use to describe the Mint's behavior. When I called yesterday about my subscription, I was told that it had been cancelled and that I must have cancelled it and that the subscription was sold out so there wasn't anything anyone could do about it. If the sales people didn't know about the cancellation of the program, that's disgraceful. If they knew about it and were instructed not to tell customers, that's even worse.

Fairness would be determining in advance how to handle a program and then following through with commitments. It isn't fair to sell out a series just to gauge demand and then yank the rug out from under the buyers.

It didn't take a genius to figure out that this series would be in high demand and that offering 10-year subscriptions on a limited production series would lead to problems.

I agree with dreamer completely. He and I subscribed to this set. the mint has taken away our right because the mint goofed up. In my opinion that is not fair. We will now again have to try our luck when the coin releases again. There is only one way to describe what the mint did unethical. The one dollar coin set was bought out by dealers (issue limit 50k) the mint did nothing there. When the same thing happened again they gave us genuine buyers the shaft. Truly and completely disgraceful. Its a sad chapter in the ugly book called the US mint

I just called, I talked to a supervisor named Ed, he was pretty condesending. If I private business acted this way they would be out of business in a year. It is a disgrace that our tax dollars are going to support the very institution that is screwing us over. A letter to my Rep is coming, anyone have any other effective ways to register my displesure?
