    To me it looks like the plate that goes on a sword right above at the handle. To protect the hand.
    Called the Hushou hand guard.

    Not that this thread is worthy of more discussion, but Maurice Benas is right on. This is a crude imitation of a Japanese Tsuba, probably made in China or South-East Asia.
