Strikes from two different dies?

JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

Friday night question. Thought about this and was curious.

Has there ever been a coin or medal whose design necessitated being struck on one side by two different dies (consecutively and on purpose), each with a different design, in order to achieve a special design effect? I believe the answer is probably "no" but thought I should ask here. Thanks.

Possibly Moonlight Mint did something like this (I'm not saying they did). I never heard of the US Mint doing it.

The new strike wipes out the old strike in a lot of cases. the effect you suggest would be a poor one. I'm sure it's been tried and the results determined to be poor.

As was said moonlight mint does overstrikes. It wipes out the older strike.

You'd need to plan 2ND and 3Rd strike dies that don't touch certain first strike devices and work in other areas of the coins surface on the subsequent strikes. But it all could be put on the same die and just slows down the minting process I think.
