I'm finding lots of interesting coins as I inventory my collect to reduce some of it. I had forgotten that I had this Nickel strike through, in fact I didn't know what it was until just recently. I read that mint workers used small squares of fine sandpaper to clean dies and some time they get left on the die by accident. It seems apparent that it was a square of something. What are the thoughts on the possible item that caused this?
Hard to tell from the photos, at least for me, but could it be a lamination error? Great looking piece to have. How did you come to get this in your possession?
To help educate myself, could you explain the perfect right angle. While I haven't done (but will) a lot of research on Lamination Error, I thought most were random in shape. Thanks
Yes, laminations are random shapes. Your's is a random rectangular (partially) shaped lamination. Not unusual to find laminations on all denominations that have one or even two 'straight' line areas.
