I started a new batch of uncleaned ancients today. I noticed something odd. One of the coins appeared to perfectly round. That is strange. I started on it and fond it to be a 1781 Austrian Kreutzer. The as dug condition was the same on the entire batch.
Nice find! Possible someone reburied a group of ancient coins after 1781 and included the Kreutzer. Banks weren't that much more stable in the 1700's than they were 2000 years earlier. And there were plagues and wars happening. Especially in rural areas, burying valuables for safekeeping was probably common. Cal
A batch of uncleaned coins certainly doesn't mean that they were found together. However, modern coins are sometimes found buried near ancient coins. They can even become mixed together from anything that disturbs the ground, like construction or tilling.
That is incredibly unlikely. A much more obvious and appropriate answer is that these coins represent a group of metal-detected finds which normally would be 'picked over' to remove any modern material. This piece was obviously missed. However, this coin remains useful in that it perhaps hints at where this group of uncleaned ancients might have come from. Its presence within this group suggests they were found in a zone where Hapsburg currency circulated later, which realistically covers large swathes of central and eastern Europe.
