    Both statements contain some correct information. Nickels are a 75% copper and 25% nickel alloy but they aren't layered like other coins. The whole coin is comprised of this alloy. So, if you cut it in half...you won't see any copper.

    However, I already posted an example of a nickel that is coated in copper from the mint...and this is a mint error. This coin was struck on a nickel planchet. Here is a quote from an older thread of mine that describes this process:
