Hello Victorio Your coin is plated. It is considered damage to coin collectors. Still worth a penny though.
I agree, your coin has been plated after it left the mint. The certificate doesn't really mean anything, it probably does not even have anything to do with that particular coin. Even if it did, it only states that the coins in the collection that came with the certificate are genuine US coins. The plated cent is a genuine US coin, it has just been altered after it was minted.
Yeah, I figured as much. I have three coins & and three cert.'s. Probably a gimmick from days gone by.....
I have a silver looking 1953 wheat penny. It is not magnetic it also does not have a mint mark on it. The silver looking stuff is wore of the edges a bit. I can see some silverish colored on the egdes but very little. I do have pictures. I will try to send them
I have had this coin. I am just an average person. I know zero about coins. I have a 1953 non minted silver looking wheat penny. I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything
Hi Grace, most likely it is plated, probably with zinc as 1,000s are made in chemistry classes every year. When I teach chem, it is a fun experiment . Jim https://www.sciencecompany.com/Turn-Copper-Pennies-Into-Silver-and-Gold-Pennies.aspx

This thread is from 2011. Start a new thread. Post pictures not a link. Coins are not magnetic. They are ferromagnetic such as a steel Cent which means they stick to a magnet. Most likely plated. Plating can be ferromagnetic.
Sorry. Your coin has been plated with something. Little to no value. It might bring a few dollars as a jewelry piece.
Ok since the other members dared to open the link you provided that is a Cent in a Coin Bezel then definitely plated.. Worth? $1.00 in a flea market bin.
