Allow me to show you the difference between Cronin's book and McDonald's book. (And just for the record, McDonald refers to coins being "stamped;" they are struck, not stamped. Also, it's "doubled die" not double die. Someone who truly understands errors would not use such terms.) You be the judge as to the quality and professional look of each book, in the organization, photos, and detailed explanations. I say, you get what you pay for. McDonald's book: And Below is Cronin's book (Mint Errors to Die For)
Hi Mike! I agree!! Especially the information from Robert Ransom!! That really helped me understand this much better! Contrary to common belief by some, doing research on your own doesn't always result in immediate understanding!!! Sometimes just one key element is missing/overlooked that makes it all come together!! Roberts explanation resolved that for me. It makes sense to me now that a true doubled die would result in both areas being the same height. I'm sure I have heard/read that before during my research, but just didn't pickup on it. I may also check out the book. Thanks and good luck to you too!!!
All this talk about doubled dies . Yet no one talks about classifications of double dies . Just in case anybody is interested there's nine classifications of double dies . Class 8 and 9 are both the same . Carry on ....
Even the best have trouble identifying DD Coinage. Anything I think I put in DD jug. After a few I give them to the next family cubby that appears. Some are young so I tell their moms. Their saved. That Rick member is good. I just rather read his replies. Cuz I see all kinds of DD’s.(yeah right). Ok. I’m coming clean. I save all (cents). 1972. 1982. 1988because when I started with coinage. This was all I knew. My ma gave me a 7 coin set of 82’s in plastic. She collected for awhile. Never knew. Then we found her stash. Mostly coins from the mint. Damn Rick This is where my reply landed before I read on. So cool for us
Buffalo I really try. I have had 2 39 Monticello’s. Those I could tell. But I just can’t tell yet. I had trouble with 82 small and large dates for the longest time. But DD’s. Don’t think I’ll be able to tell Like the 95 cents. Hade about 10 of those. I could see those with a loop. Thinking that’s only because I’ve saw so many CT pictures of them
