I messaged him to ask a few days ago. I think this picture of the reverse die seals it: Note similar damage between the "P" and "T" of the reverse legend and to the right of the dog and above the dog. Maybe the op-coin was the host coin but I am doubtful.
Yea - notice the scratches on the die and notice - you can see them in front of the OP coin's dog's fore paws.
No, thanks to all of you of letting me know about this. Its part of the hobby unfortunately. Btw, this wasn't an Ebay buy. It was one of the most respected dealers in the world, and even larger dealers have sold examples of it. Oh well, teaches me to buy someone on a whim I have not read up on. Should free up money to go after more coins though.
Sucks to see a nice coin like that turn out to be counterfeit. But I have to admit, that die is pretty neat.
As a followup, the firm I bought this from looked at the evidence those here supplied, and agreed its most likely fake. They will give me a full refund once I mail it back to them. I haven't received it yet since its coming from Frankfurt. On the good side, I bought a group of 30 large Roman bronzes in the same auction. I can have fun with those.
Your thread's name is "Steve may like this one" ... I did like it (but not quite as much now that it's lookin' like a fake) => glad to hear that you'll be getting your cash back cheers, medoraman
